Tragic incident in Sudan: cargo plane with Russians on board shot down
On October 21, 2024, a terrible event occurred in Sudan - an Il-76 cargo plane was shot down, presumably with Russian citizens on board.
According to the portal Sudanwarmonitor, which monitors the military situation in the country, the plane was shot down in the Malha area in North Darfur.
The separatists from the "Rapid Support Forces" (RSF) claimed responsibility for this incident. It later became known that weapons and mercenaries from the PMC "Wagner" supporting the rebels were on board the plane.
The Russian Embassy in Sudan confirmed the crash, noting that the situation is complicated by the fact that the crash zone belongs to the conflict-ridden Darfur. The diplomatic department is in contact with the Sudanese government to establish the causes of the incident.
According to reports, the crew included citizens of Russia and Kyrgyzstan. The exact number of casualties and fatalities is currently unknown, but usually, the Il-76 crew consists of 5 people. It is known that one of the deceased is Viktor Granov, the chief engineer of the Airline Transport Incorporation FZC company.
According to preliminary data, the plane was shot down by a MANPADS. The RSF separatists mistook it for a US Air Force bomber.
