Turkey opens for mass tourism one of the most mysterious islands.

In Turkey, a project is underway to revitalize the tourist island of Giresun, which is one of the smallest and most beautiful islands in the Black Sea. This information was reported by Turizm News.

Giresun Island is the only inhabited island in the Eastern Black Sea region and is located 1.2 km from the shore of Giresun city in northeastern Turkey. The Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Turkey supported the project to improve the tourist appeal of the island.

The Governor of Giresun, Mehmet Fatih Serdengeçti, stated: "Giresun Island, which has been included in the investment program of our Ministry of Culture, is valuable for our region and province. It is the only inhabited island in the Eastern Black Sea region, symbolizes our ancient civilization, and is an important tourist destination with rich history, mythology, and nature."

Excavations on the island revealed that the first settlements were founded about 4 thousand years ago. The island is associated with many legends and myths. It preserves the remains of an ancient stone temple associated with the goddess Cybele, as well as ruins of walls, towers, and the Monastery of the Holy Virgin, built in the 5th or 6th century.

The island is also known for its rich flora and fauna. Over 71 species of plants grow here, including endemic ones, and many species of birds can be observed. Also, dozens of tufted cormorants and rare gulls inhabit the island.

Development of the island for tourists

Currently, the island is not included in excursion routes, but about 50 thousand tourists visit it annually. However, in order to develop tourism on the island, it is planned to create excursion routes, viewing platforms, recreation areas, cafes, and a safe pier that many visitors can see. The works should be completed by 2025.

A plan for the construction of a cable car connecting the island with the ancient castle of the city is also being considered. The authorities also plan to combat litter on the island and strengthen measures to protect it from damage.

It is worth noting that Estonia has put up for sale the island of Hõralaid, where construction is allowed, with an initial price of 2 euros per square meter.
