The Estonian Foreign Minister supported Trump's idea of increasing defense spending
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna supported the call from US President Donald Trump to increase defense spending in NATO countries. He noted that Moscow continues to pose a threat, so increasing spending is very important. Estonia plans to increase its defense budget to 5% of GDP. Tsahkna also mentioned that he supports Trump's ideas in this matter.
The threat from Moscow inspired an increase in defense spending
Efforts to increase defense spending among NATO countries began not out of a desire to yield to Trump, but due to the threat from Moscow. Tsahkna emphasized that Estonia is ready to be prepared for any actions and will not allow any territorial encroachments.
The importance of indicating spending as a percentage of GDP
In addition, Tsahkna stresses that it is very fair to demand all NATO countries to indicate spending as a percentage of GDP. This will allow for 'honest figures'.
Increasing defense spending by cutting other expenses
In order to increase defense spending, Estonia has cut other public expenditures and raised taxes.
