The Chancellor of Germany addressed Slovakia regarding the blocking of sanctions.


In the European Union, the 18th package of sanctions against Russia has not yet been adopted due to Slovakia's negative position, which is unwilling to impose restrictions on the aggressor country. The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, addressed Slovakia in this regard.
Merz called on Slovakia to stop blocking the sanctions package against Russia
During a speech at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, the Chancellor of Germany urged Slovakia not to hinder the introduction of new sanctions against Russia.
He emphasized that the sanctions policy is an important tool for pressuring the enemy to end the war against Ukraine. The Chancellor stated: 'We are preparing the 18th EU sanctions package against Russia. Only one agreement is needed for its adoption. I urge Slovakia to clear the way for this decision.'
Recently, ambassadors of EU countries could not reach an agreement regarding the sanctions package against Russia, but it was previously reported that EU countries might have found a way to bypass Slovakia's blockade on sanctions.
During the conference in Rome, the Chancellor of Germany called on Slovakia not to block the adoption of new sanctions against Russia. He stressed the importance of the sanctions policy for ending the war in Ukraine and tried to convince his Slovak colleagues to support the 18th EU sanctions package.
